Introduction to Cost Deployment
Cost deployment has been popularized by the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) approach, which focuses on improving manufacturing costs with a direct bottom-line impact.
While other WCM/TPM/Operating System pillars like Professional Maintenance (Planned Maintenance or Machine Reliability) and Quality Management enhance equipment reliability and process quality, Cost Deployment helps identify proactive cost reduction opportunities for profitability.
How
Cost deployment uses cost loss matrices (costs analyses) to identify current financial losses (e.g., material yield, line speed, setup times, energy use) and target areas for cost savings. It examines losses across the entire production system, differentiating between causal and result losses, and prioritizes improvements based on their wider impact on the system.
